Palestine :

Today marks the end of Gilad Shalit’s third year in captivity.

For three long years, Gilad Shalit has been denied the rights of every prisoner of war under international law:

No visits from a neutral party to ensure his well-being (or if he is even alive).

No verifiable healthcare; no way to verify the treatment he is receivng at the hands of his captors.

No letters or packages from his family and no letters from him to his family, except when a “special envoy” such as Jimmy Carter delivers one personally to Hamas leaders.

Violation of the convention for exchanging prisoners of war (laid down as far back as the Napoleonic Wars, Gilad is a staff sergeant; the conventions dictate one sergeant or ten privates) Hamas has demanded the release of more than 1,000 prisoners.

Write to the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN protesting the treatment of Gilad Shalit and the Palestinian violations of international law.

Shame on suggesting a peace in a region to achieve by freedom for terrorists and captivity of Israelis kidnapped from their land as chips for bargaining.

Perhaps, Gilad Shalit return is to be both the most and the must for any further contacts with any “true believers”.

What does J. Carter say on THIS topic?

Michael, where did I suggest freeing terrorists?

If I had my way, the Israeli government would have set Gilad’s unconditional return as a precondition for any talks. Unfortunately he was taken at a time when there was an Israeli government without the cojones to stand up and say this.

At the very most, I would be able to agree, very reluctantly, with a one-for-one exchange, period. Anything else encourages Hamas to try again– and they have tried– and failed.
