What Apartheid is and is not...

This week is “Israel Apartheid Week” in North American universities. That being the case, it is an appropriate time for those who have bought into this emotionally-charged propaganda “buzzword” to find out what the term “Apartheid” actually means before they carry their protest signs to their demonstrations.

Apartheid IS: A deliberate government policy of social, political, economic, educational and physical separation and discrimination between the people of a single country based solely on race, such as existed in South Africa.

Apartheid IS NOT: A situation in which two people of the same race, for example two SEMITIC peoples, are at war.

Apartheid IS NOT: A situation in which one of these nations, having lost its own state in an attempt to destroy the state of the other, finds itself conquered by the nation it had tried to destroy.

Apartheid IS NOT: A situation in which this conquered nation, having been granted partial autonomy which they did nothing to earn, continues to attempt to kill members of the conquering nation, driving their own economy into ruin because they use their children as suicide bombers and human shields rather than sending them to schools built for them at foreign expense, and which they also use as military bases.

Apartheid IS NOT: A situation in which the conquering nation undertakes measures to separate its members from those of the other nation (a separation based entirely on ideology since no racial difference between the two nations exists at all) in order to keep the members of its nation safe while still continuing to assist the hostile nation economically.

And finally, it IS NOT Apartheid when the conquering nation undertakes this method of self-defense, which still leaves its citizens vulnerable to a large extent, only because they find the much more effective method of expelling the hostile nation from the conquered territory morally reprehensible.

Now, to believe that “Israel is an Apartheid state”, you have to believe the following:

1) That Islam and Judaism are races, not religions.

2) That the entire area of Palestine as defined by the League of Nations, including Israel, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights and Jordan is a single national entity.

3) That the self-declared Palestinians are legitimate citizens of the State of Israel (which, by their own admission, they are not and do not wish to be).

4) That the state of Israel, or indeed any state, does not have the right to defend and protect its citizens from belligerent actions by foreign entities.

IF you can believe these four points, you can believe any fallacy presented to you, as long as it suits your own prejudices. If that’s the case, I have a bridge I’d like to sell you… cheap!

Remember these facts the next time you wish to call Israel an “Apartheid State”.

One can’t believe such ignorance at institutions of higher learning. There is clearly a form of apartheid in the Middle East that cries out for vigorous student protests but it comes not from Israel but from Arab Muslims. It’s a vicious form of Religious Apartheid which manifests itself by their demands that Jews not be allowed to live where Arabs govern, hence the demand for the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the West Bank.

I am a former lawyer in South Africa that was actively involved in representing clients charged under South African’s draconian apartheid legislation such as the Group Areas Act and the Race Classification Act. The laws in Israel do not remotely bear any resemblance to the apartheid laws in South Africa. Under apartheid in South Africa, there were no black members of parliament. Yet there are Palestinian MK’s that sit in the Knesset. Under apartheid in South Africa, no black could ever be admitted to a white hospital. Yet when I was admitted to a large hospital in Jerusalem during a recent trip to Israel, the patients in the same ward as me were Palestinians and I was also treated by a Palestinian medical technician. That would have been absolutely unheard of under the apartheid regime in South Africa. Also, under apartheid in South Africa, non-whites (as they were referred to there at the time) could not participate in any sports in which whites competed. No matter how gifted or talented, a black could not compete or participate in any sport in which whites played. That is so different to Israel where there are Palestinians who play on the Israeli national soccer team. Yet there is not a single Jew that plays on any of the Arab national teams or for any of its teams from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Syria or any other Moslem country.

Like the word “holocaust” is being bandied about in the liberal news media, so the word “apartheid” is also being used for emotional effect, despite the fact that none of the apartheid laws are in place in Israel, the only true democracy in the Middel East.

Real apartheid is found in places like Saudi Arabia and Gaza where “apart” means the state dictates who remains a part and of society and who must remain apart from society. Those who find themselves on the outs are dealt a blow by brutal Sharia law that was designed for miscreants of the 7th century.

In Israel there are over 1 million Arabs who live, work and vote in Israel. Israel does not want to govern nor make decisions for those in the West Bank and Gaza and Israel would prefer that they discover their own solutions - but they MUST be peaceful solutions that respect the security and existence of Israel. What country would give their neighbors carte blanche to destroy it as the Arabs have proven again and again in the past is their immediate and ultimate goal? Only an insane leadership would support its own killers.

Sometimes words are just as dangerous. Apartheid Week's poster is blatant propaganda and nothing more. It tries to paint Israel as a bloodthirsty regime, when in fact all Israel is doing is protecting its citizens. In doing this, many believe that Israel is a source of evil and nothing more. Instead of educating themselves, they go like sheep to these conferences and believe everything they hear. I am against extremists on both sides. What is important is dialogue. Once there is no dialogue, there is danger.

Present day Syria (and the former Iraq) is a perfect example of an Apartheid state with the minority Baath Party ruling with an iron fist over everyone else (with no chance of voting them out)!

Michael,

Interesting that the usual suspects have no comments for this post.

Am going to use part of this post (and link to it) for a post on my other, woefully neglected, blog. It’s going to go hand and hand with a post I read about an Israeli Bedouin Ishmael Khaldi who talks about the same thing.

Well done and thanks!
